Banks was the second-string quarterback for the Houston Texans behind David Carr, and was since the franchise started play in 2002. He has previously played for the Washington Redskins, Baltimore Ravens, and St. Louis Rams. Before he signed with the Washington Redskins, he had tried out for the Dallas Cowboys, however go cut on August 15, 2001. While he was with the Redskins, he became the first quarterback to go from an 0-5 record to a 5-5 record.

On February 28, 2006, Banks was released by the Houston Texans, along with Marcus Coleman and Tony Hollings.
